  2. Stats update automatically as you type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Character Counter free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no limits.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. All counting happens in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.

What's the difference between characters and letters?

Characters include everything — letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, emoji. Letters are only alphabetic characters (A-Z, a-z, and Unicode letters like Urdu or Arabic).

What are UTF-8 bytes?

UTF-8 bytes show how much space the text takes when stored as UTF-8. ASCII characters are 1 byte each, but emoji, Urdu, and other Unicode can be 2-4 bytes each.

Does it count emoji correctly?

Yes. Each emoji is counted as its character length (which may be more than 1 due to surrogate pairs) and correctly reflects byte size in UTF-8.

What is character frequency?

Character frequency shows the most common characters in your text. Useful for writers analyzing their writing style or detecting accidental repeated characters.
