What is a UUID?
A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit label used to uniquely identify information in computer systems. It's typically shown as 32 hexadecimal digits arranged in five groups: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-Mxxx-Nxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx. The M digit indicates the version, and N indicates the variant.
UUID versions
v4 — Random
122 random bits. Most common. Unpredictable, cryptographically strong.
v1 — Time-based
Based on timestamp + node. Sortable by creation time, but leaks MAC address.
v7 — Time-ordered random
48-bit Unix timestamp + random. Modern replacement for v1 and v4 for databases.
NIL — All zeros
Special UUID with all bits zero. Sometimes used as a null/placeholder value.

What is a UUID?

Which version should I use?
